Biographical / Historical

Thomas Noel Stern was born July 7, 1913 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated with honors from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1934 and received an MA and a PhD (1940 and 1942 respectively) in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He married Katherine Kirk in 1940.As a Quaker, he was a conscientious objector during World War II, choosing to labor on dairy and fruit farms in Pennsylvania and New Jersey instead of serving in the military. After the war, he taught at Boston University (1945-1953), was director of the Foundation des Etats-Unis, Universite de Paris (1953-1956), and was president of West Chester State College in Pennsylvania (1960-1961). He joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 1964, founding the Political Science department, and retired in 1985 as professor emeritus. Stern died in 2005.
