Biographical / Historical

Formerly called the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project, the West Chester Writing Project (WCWP) is one of the oldest sites of the National Writing Project (NWP). The Writing Project provides professional development and develops resources and programs that help improve and support the teaching of writing and learning in elementary education. The Writing Project offers both school-year and summer courses and workshops in the following areas: teaching writing and literature, assessment, and writing-reading connections. Special topic courses and workshops of interest to educators are sometimes held as well.

Their mission statement is as follows: "The West Chester Writing Project is a community of educators whose work is grounded in the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of local teachers. We collaborate with area school districts to provide high-quality, inquiry-based learning experiences for teachers and students. We celebrate our rich history of teachers teaching teachers, and we strive for innovative methods to inspire readers and writers."
