Overview

The West Chester University Twardowski Career Development Center Collection features programs, newsletters, promotional materials, annual reports, surveys, and placement data. All collection materials are from the Placement Services Center, a previous iteration of the Twardowski Career Development Center, on campus. Materials range in date from 1952-1975.

Biographical / Historical

The first iteration of the career center was the Placement Services office, which opened in 1947 at West Chester State Teachers College. It was founded by West Chester alumnus, Dr. Edward T. Twardowski, who served for 11 years as its first director. The Placement Services office offered career conferences, information sessions, and workshops that helped students network and become gainfully employed. In 1971, it became known as the Placement and Career Services Center.

In addition to being the Director of Placement Services, Dr. Twardowski (Class of 1942) served the university in other roles over his 25 years here, including being a professor of health and physical education, counselor, and coach of the swim team, tennis team, and a team of first year football students.

On May 6, 2000, the office was renamed to the Twardowski Career Development Center in honor of its founding Director. The Twardowski family endowed the university with a leadership gift to help support career guidance and development programs and services, which assist students and alumni in securing employment.

The Twardowski Career Development Center's mission is to serve "as the bridge connecting students and alumni to the professional world, introducing them to who they can become." [1] Their strategic priorities include "making career development visible, approachable, and inclusive in every event, service, resource, program, and classroom engagement". [2] The Twardowski Career Development Center assists students with career guidance and development, hosts campus job fairs, and leads resume and cover letter workshops and other events for the West Chester University community.
