Overview

The Frank William and Dorothy Given Miller collection consists of college memorabilia, photographs, and newspapers. Frank and Dorothy both attended West Chester State Normal School, graduating in 1920 and 1919 respectively. Materials in this collection range in date from 1913 to 1980, with the bulk of items being from 1913 to 1927.

Biographical / Historical

Frank William Miller and Dorothy Given Miller attended West Chester State Normal School, now known as West Chester University (WCU), and graduated in 1920 and 1919 respectively. Frank was from Lemoyne, PA and Dorothy was from Honey Brook, PA. They met at a high school they both attended in Honey Brook, PA, where Frank was president of his senior class and Dorothy went to vocational school.

Frank's senior biography in the 1920 Serpentine yearbook called him a "dynamic force" and an excellent person, as well as a "smasher of feminine hearts" and a "noble lad". He was a member of the Aryan Literary Society and Glee Club, and he played cymbals in the school band. Dorothy's senior biography in the 1919 Serpentine yearbook detailed that Dorothy, or "Dot" as she was called, was "an earnest and hard worker" and that she was "always ready for a good time and believe[d] in the old saying, 'there's a time for work and a time for play.'" Dorothy was also a member of the Aryan Literary Society.

After college, Frank attended Cornell University to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1924. He later became a fellow and life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and served as both a Chairman of ASME's Philadelphia section and Vice Chairman of ASME's national organization in 1962. Other organizations he was a part of and/or he held were President, Vice President, and life member of the Engineers Club of Philadelphia, President of the Manufacturers Association of Greater Philadelphia, and a member of the National and Pennsylvania Societies of Professional Engineers.

Frank and Dorothy married and had several children. They both had fond memories of attending West Chester State Normal School and their love for the school continued, as they formed an annual scholarship, since they believed in the importance of education for everyone. They established an annual scholarship, the Dorothy Given Miller '19 and Frank William Miller '20 Endowed Scholarship Fund, in 1992. Frank also served as a reunion chairman in the late 1960s.
