Biographical / Historical
West Chester University's Department of Anthropology and Sociology offers interdisciplinary social sciences courses that help students build skills and specialized knowledge related to material and non-material culture, communities, and behaviors. The department offers Bachelor of Arts degrees and minors in Anthropology and Sociology, as well as a Museum Studies minor.
The Department of Anthropology and Sociology's mission is "to provide broad access to the skills and special knowledge inherent in our disciplines, to nurture an awareness of and appreciation for diversity, to promote a sense of civic responsibility, global awareness, and cultural competency in our students, and to support original and collaborative scholarship by faculty and students." In addition to coursework, students have opportunities through the department to participate in internships, field experiences, exhibitions, service learning, and studying abroad. The department also holds programming and cultural seminars in collaboration with WCU Institute for Race and Ethnic Studies and other university partners.
