Biographical / Historical

The West Chester Bird Club was founded in March 1910 by Dr. Clyde E. Ehinger due to the interest his 1908 lectures on birds garnered in the local community. Between 1908 and 1910, Dr. Ehinger led bird walks in the Borough of West Chester and surrounding areas a few times a week. The informal group also met to discuss their findings on a weekly basis. The first official meeting in 1910 was held in the home of Dr. Clyde Ehringer and Ella Long Ehinger, teachers at the West Chester State Normal School.

The club is still active today, making it one of the longest continually active bird clubs in the country. Throughout the years, bird watching field trips and conservation efforts have been at the forefront of and integral to the club's activities.
